Intellectual Property

We live in the Information Age, where use of information and exploitation of intellectual property rights may involve Legislation.
Layonu and co provides a comprehensive and integrated array of legal services in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, outsourcing, computer, technology, software, restrictive covenant and franchise law. These services include obtaining protection, registrations, amendments and renewals with respect to all types of patents, copyrights, trade secrets, data protection, design rights, service marks and trademarks. The Group also counsels on licensing, marketing, distribution and other commercial transactions regarding products, services and technologies protectable under international, federal, state or local intellectual property laws.

Layonu and co litigates and provides advice about disputes involving the protection and enforcement of rights in patents, trademarks, copyrights, confidential information and trade secrets, technology, covenants not to compete, and other intellectual property. Our lawyers have significant experience in prosecuting and defending copyright, trademark and patent infringement cases, unfair competition actions, Internet and technology disputes (including those involving software and computer technology), franchise disputes, false advertising claims, litigation concerning trade secrets and restrictive covenants, and other claims relating to intellectual property.

We are well-versed not only on the substance of intellectual property law, including obtaining and defending against temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions that often are sought in intellectual property actions. Our lawyers also are proficient in resolving disputes through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as arbitration and mediation.

Our services are rendered primarily in the non-contentious area to IP owners, proprietors and licensees with respect to registration at the Trade Marks office in Nigeria. The firm also provides a "Watch" service for possible infringement of intellectual property rights and has acted on a few occasions to seek litigation remedies on behalf of major international brands to enforce intellectual property rights.
